Do not read this until you have read posts 1-3!
*********************************************************************
As much as I am sad not being there, I am going to stay positive as this is a great opportunity for you to utilize the library time for research and I am still here through email for you!
Now, I am going to give you the next step in the process. At this point, if you are looking at this--you have completed your 5 index cards including quotes and have emailed them to me. If you haven't done that yet--STOP (capital letters= very important information) and go back. No need to get ahead of yourself!
You have until Monday for all of this work--so make sure that it is thoroughly done and that you are not getting it done quick--just to get it done. However, at the end of each class, I need to see through an email what you have done so far and if I see nothing--I assume the worst --and don't put me in that position.
Okay are you ready for the next research aspect? If yes, then look below:
**************************************************************
Part 2- The Skeletal Outline
What you will be doing next is creating a skeletal outline for your paper. It doesn't matter how many pages you will be writing for the actual paper, rather regardless it is important to see where your paper is going to go in terms of sub-topics and subject matter.
The way that you will be doing this is by creating an attachment through word and emailing it to yourself as well as me.
This is the format that your outline will take:
Option 1: I found this amazing website that allows you to create this interactively online!!-- If you use this, then after you finish some of your work, click submit and it will put it in document form for you. Copy and paste the information into Word and create an attachment to send to me--regardless of what is done/ not done. http://www.crlsresearchguide.org/NewOutlineMaker/NewOutlineMakerInput.aspx
Option 2: This is great as well! Just immediately copy and paste into Word and work from there. Again--send progress along the way http://www.crlsresearchguide.org/worksheets/outline%20worksheet.htm
Clarifications for the steps that your outline will take:
1) Like in the SAT Essay, you should choose your strongest arguments/points/examples first--what will best support your standpoint? Which idea will get your point across most thoroughly? Which aspect will draw readers in, making them want to read more? You are looking to get readers into your figurative grasp--and keep them there the entire time! If it looks like snooze-fest 2011 right off the bat--would you continue willingly to read it? So, organize your subheadings in that respect.
2) Thesis Statement- Do not worry about this till later as far as a formal thesis--but I would like an informal skeletal one. What position will this research paper take? What is the main point that you are trying to convey? What is the purpose? Those are all questions that you should look to when formulating your thesis.
3) Supporting Evidence- This is where you will take quotes from your note cards and place them under the appropriate category
4) Title- Think of one and write it in--remember everything can be changed later if you are unhappy
If you have questions--do not hesitate to email me. If I do not get back to you right away, I will get back to you at latest within the next hour or so. Still, if I have not heard back from people on their topics--it needs to happen asap.
Get working! I cant wait to see how much your papers will unfold before our eyes!!! Very exciting!

Post 3- The Birthmark Questions and The Minister's Black Veil Questions
Note: If you have not finished reading post 1 and 2--go there first and foremost before looking at this post!
**************************************************
If you did not finish these in class or misplaced them-- here are the questions!
Period 2- The Birthmark
Remember that in the myth, Pygmalion, a sculptor convinced of the faultiness of women, resolves to remain unmarried. Nevertheless, he falls in love with one of his own creations: a beautiful marble statue of a young maiden and prays to the gods that they send him a woman just like her to be his bride. Listening to his prayers, Venus, brings Pygmalion's statue to life and when he returns to his home, he is delighted to find that the marble figure as become a real woman. Venus blesses the wedding between the two.
Hawthorne makes direct allusions to the Pygmalion myth in "The Birth-mark." How does Aylmer act as a latter day Pygmalion? How do these stories differ from each other and, most importantly, what can we learn from these differences?
Period 6- The Minister's Black Veil
1 People often go through five stages when they must deal with loss or change. Can you find an example of each one in the story as people try to understand the change in Mr. Hooper?
Denial
Anger
Bargaining
Depression
Acceptance
2 What incidents start rumors about Mr. Hooper's reason for wearing the veil?
3 Why does Elizabeth break her engagement to Mr. Hooper?
4 As time passes, how do people treat Mr. Hooper? Consider the actions of children and of the dying. Why do you think they treat him that way?
5 Hawthorne is careful to describe Rev. Clark of Westbury as "young and zealous." What difference does Rev. Clark's age make? How might a minister closer to Mr. Hooper's age have handled the situation?
6 Why do you think Mr. Hooper will not remove the veil, even as he is dying?

Post 2-Interactive Class
If you have not yet read post 1, please do so before you read 2, as it will make more sense to you.
Truthfully, I was going to have us charge ahead with more literature, but I believe it would be best to put that on pause because I love discussions and it wouldn't be as beneficial to have reading and questions without discussion. I hope this is not just me that believes this?
So, Mrs. Nietsche has been extremely kind in getting us to the lab on such short notice! This way, we can utilize today minimally to begin your research process!!! This is why I said, send me your topics--for those who did, today will be smooth sailing. If you have not yet, before you do anything else, send them to me right now. If I gave you feedback and you have to make a decision, email me as well. I would like to know the results of your discernment .
Task:
Today you will be finding websites or books in the library that are reliable and trustworthy resources. Now remember, a reliable source is one that has references, exists as a reference and cannot be updated by any member of the public community that wishes to comment or add information. Therefore, wikipedia and other similar media are out of the picture.
Last time, I asked you to bring in note cards where you would fill out necessary information--instead you will be creating your note cards on Microsoft word, this way you can save it to utilize when you are compiling your actual paper.
YOU NEED TO HAVE 5 NOTE CARDS MINIMALLY* (Bold= Important)
Sources: When looking for sources here are some options:
Making Source Cards: Back Side- Find 5 quotes that you can utilize in your paper. If you are unable to find at least five, then it is possible that your topic is too narrow or the website is not adequate enough. On each of the note cards, you are to do this.
Front Side: There is the option of books
or
If you are using an online or web resource, you would follow this format:
Note that if it is just a website, then it may not have the article name and date of article. Rather you may just find the website having the title, url, and date last updated. Sometimes if the information is there then it is and if it isn't then it isn't. Normally source information is either at the bottom or top of a web page. However, remember to check because I always double check your sources at the end.
It is important that if you have questions, that you are persistently emailing me.
Here is the format that your note cards may take:
Note card 1: Draw a Giant Text Box and fill in the front, then another text box and the back.
My creative image for this would not post, but you are all very smart people and can draw text boxes for information.
Remember I want 5 resources and the wonderful thing about this is...you will email me what you have done before the end of the class for a grade!! Show me progress and I will be happy! If I do not receive anything--I will assume you twiddled your thumbs--better to send something then have that assumption effect your grade.
Good luck and happy searching!
ps Realism Short Stories Due! Remind me when I get back to tell you my realism short story experience- it was just too much!

Hello Students! Post 1
Hello, everyone! I hope you are all well! Two of you probably do not have a computer, unless more aren't working, so try to be nice and share with one another. If the noble substitute allows, maybe use the standing computer as well. I appreciate your finding patience in dealing with my absence, as I am trying to do the same. I truly wish to be back and teaching all of you. Hopefully it will be soon! It looks like we will have to interact through here for the next day or so. In lieu of that, this is what you need to do. When I post something, you are to respond to me through email or by posting directly here, rather on your own personal bloggers. It would be easiest truly to just email me responses. The link to this blog will remain on our edline page, so just click on the link each time!
If you are having difficulty with any assignment or aspect of the text, I am making it your responsibility to email me and let me know. During class time, I will be online and available for all questions, so there is no excuse allowed!
At this point between Friday and Wednesday, you should have completed the following. This should be a personal checklist and if something is incomplete, make certain it is done by the time I see you next.
Checklist:
1) Story Workshopping
2) Realism Quest
3) SAT Essay
4) 5 Possible Research Topics- Still waiting on many--this is inexcusable as most who have sent me theirs have received grades and hopefully helpful feedback!
5) Minister's Black Veil Read Per 6/ The Birthmark Read
6) Summary Points for the Minister's Black Veil and 6 questions- Period 6/ Same assignment, except for The Birthmark- Period 2
Now that we have gotten through the details---what I plan on doing is hosting the class online for today minimally. This means that you are completing the work, emailing it to me, and will receive feedback as well as a grade by the end of the period or day, depending on how quickly I receive your work.
If I do not receive something by the end of the period--it is safe for me to assume you were twiddling your thumbs. I do try to be as present as possible, but I am not Big Brother in a surveillance camera! That would be strange! So, make sure you are doing your work and if you are confused ask questions.! Your substitute has my number in the case that you have an academic related question. Otherwise, it would be easiest to email me for a speedy response.
Once you have read this, you must continue to post 2!------->
